I bumped into Dan Barnard of Green Bay, Wisconsin on MOTL as I was beginning this project. He has over 10,000 Stone Rain cards! What I have in diversity, he makes up for in sheer quantity. He was gracious enough to sift through his immense collection to try and find cards I needed for my global set. In the end he did find a few cards I could use. When I finish the Stone Rain Project, I plan to trade all my extra Stone Rains to him. Does anyone out there have a bigger Stone Rain collection than this guy?
What follows is a little interview that I conducted with Dan via e-mail about his massive Stone Rain collection:
- Why did you start collecting Stone Rain in particular?
- There was a guy at the local card store that was collecting Skulking Ghosts and ripping them in half, he had like 130 of them, I thought I could beat that number, so I found the most common card in all of Magic and started collecting them, but I do not rip them up. It became kind of a humorous thing once word got around and I just kept going.
- Which Stone Rain has the best artwork in your opinion?
- My favorite artwork is Kaja Foglio's in Ice Age, I may be biased though, because I have one Stone Rain that is autographed and it is by her.
- What was the most unusual trade you made to get a Stone Rain?
- I traded someone with a huge Magic Collection 168 Goblins for 168 Stone Rains, it almost wiped out every goblin that I had. The unusual part was that her husband had altered one of the Stone Rains by clipping other cards and adding to it thus making it a "Spore Rain". It had a mana cost of nine mana of various colors and it destroyed all of an opponent's lands and creatures. The cannibalized artwork and text just struck me as being exceedingly funny.
- What is the most "special" Stone Rain in your collection?
- My most special Stone Rain is the autographed one by Kaja Foglio, with the "Spore Rain" a close second.
- What do you think of the "Stone Rain Project"? <-- shameless self-promotion
- I think the Stone Rain Project is excellent! I am keeping my eyes peeled for more that I can add to it.
- Do you play Magic or just collect? Do you do any tournament play?
- I play and collect, I love playing, there are 5 of us that get together when we can and play. I love tournaments, I won a Tempest sealed deck tournament a couple years back, I came in 12th in an Invasion/Planeshift/Apocalypse tournament at GenCon last year and came in 5th in a Torment sealed deck tournament last month.
- What is your favorite MTG deck archetype?
- My favorite deck type is green/white with Kjeldoran Frostbeasts, and other creatures that destroy everything that block it combined with Lure so everything has to block it. I do better with a red/black direct damage and kill creature deck.
- Who is your favorite MTG artist?
- I am biased toward Kaja Foglio, but just because I have her autographed card. My favorite is Mark Tedin, I love the art on Barbarian Outcast.
- Name your favorite musical group.
- My favorite musical group is one person, that is and always has been Meat Loaf. I grew up on Paradise by the Dashboard Lights and Bat out of Hell. I also love Jim Steinman, the guy who wrote Meat Loafs songs and had a great album - Bad for Good. I can relate to their music so well.
- Name your favorite sports team.
- Living in Green Bay, it is legal to only have one favorite sports team, the Packers!!!!! I never miss a game. I worked there for one season, hawking pizzas in the stands, it was amazing, but did my legs hurt at the end of the game!
